In the field guide you will find all 119 fish species ('from Anchovy to Monkfish') that occur in the Dutch coastal area or that are regularly brought in from the North Sea by Dutch professional fishermen and can then be found in the fish trade. Species have also been included that regularly stray from their normal range, including the eleven-meter-long basking shark and the one-and-a-half-tonne moonfish.
The field guide was created in close collaboration with Prof. dr. Dr. Niels Daan, fishing biologist and former researcher at Wageningen Imares (the former RIVO). Other experts from Wageningen Imares, Ecomare and NIOZ have also contributed to this guide. In order to ensure that the field guide allows for optimal fish recognition, after a two-year inventory of the best available photo material, a selection is made of more than 120 images from about 40 photographers from the Netherlands and abroad.
With the field guide it is not only possible to determine marine fish. Information about their recognition, distribution, lifestyle, food and legal status is included for all fish species. So you can see for each fish species whether it is protected under the Flora and Fauna Act, a legal minimum size or closed time, where it occurs, whether it is rare in the Netherlands or generally, where it breeds and what it eats. And - not unimportant - how big he can become! Finally, the Dutch, German, English, French and scientific names are included for all fish species.
