The H2a hydrophone is designed to work with any recording device, computer, or transmitter that offers a plug-in-powered, 3.5mm microphone input. It uses a low-noise robust transducer assembly and includes a low noise internal impedance buffer amp. Operation is very simple: just connect to your recorder or computer and use. Plug-in power (PIP) is present in nearly all devices with a microphone jack of this size. Check the user manual for your recording device to be sure. PIP may need to be switched on in your device.
The H2a offers the following advantages:
Specifications H2a Hydrophone
Sensitivity: -180dB re: 1V/µPa (+/- 4dB 20Hz-4KHz)
Useful range: <10 Hz to >100KHz (not measured above 100KHz, approximate sensitivity @100KHz = -220dB re: 1V/µPa)
Polar Response: Omnidirectional (horizontal)
Operating depth: <80 meters
Output impedance: 2 KΩ (typical)
Power: 0.3 mA (typical)
Physical: (cable and output plug excluded)
Dimensions (excluding cable)
Size: 25mm x 46mm
Mass: 105 grams
Specific Gravity: 5.3
COMPATIBILITY NOTES: The output connector used with the H2a hydrophones is also used for many other types of audio connections. A compatible jack does not ensure proper operation.
SMARTPHONES, TABLETS AND COMPUTERS: All smart phones and tablets use the same connection for both the microphone and headphones. Many newer computers also use this combination jack. The H2a will not work directly with these combination jacks. An adapter, such as the MUYHSMFF must be used. Due to limitations in the quality of the preamps that are built into these devices, we recommend using the H2a-XLR hydrophone and the Tascam DR-40X for connecting to these devices (connect by USB adapter for iPhone or iPad or use as simple preamp with appropriate adapters for Android).
MARINE STEREOS: The H2a hydrophone will not work with a line or auxiliary audio input on a marine stereo system. It will connect to many stereos, but these will not supply plug-in power or adequate gain. A mic preamp is required.
DIGITAL RECORDERS: Many of the new digital recorders require that you go into the menu system and switch on plug-in power. The H2a will not work before doing this.
