Heated Bat Roost Box

Availability: Out of stock

This FSC® Certified Heated Bat Roost Box is a large 3 crevice box suitable for larger roosts or maternity groups of the small British crevice-dwelling bats - the Common Pipistrelles, Soprano Pipistrelles and Barbastelle's bats.  These 3 species make up over three quarters of UK bats.

The box has been designed, taking into account the UK climate, to naturally warm up faster and stay warmer longer than other nesting boxes for bats.  Each of the 3 crevices inside are the right size for the bats, easy for them to climb around in, and has a different temperature characteristic, enabling the bats to choose the right one for their requirements at any point of the day.  The internal ceramic heater enhances the temperatures inside the box and makes this the ideal choice to replace lost habitat where the bats previously enjoyed some form of artificial heating.

This Improved box has been designed by our own team of ecologists, wildlife specialists and professional engineers.  It benefits from our 12 years experience of bat boxes, customer feedback, the latest scientific thinking and advice from experts on British bats.

Including all the well received features of ourImproved range of bat boxes, this new design aims to provide the right conditions for the bats inside the box, and to be simple, easy and safe to erect and use.  It is genuinely "Plug and Play", and comes as two parts: The bat box (to be fitted outside) complete with 10 metre long flexible cable, and the temperature control unit (to be fitted inside) complete with mains cord and 13A plug incorporating a residual current circuit breaker (RCD).  The product has been developed so that it is ready to fit: no wiring needs to be undertaken by the user, and no electrician or electrical engineer is required. You won't need any tools except those to fit the bat box on the wall, and secure the cable.  The 3 step installation is the ultimate in simplicity:

  1. Fit the bat box on the wall etc.
  2. Run the 10 metre long flexible cable down the wall, into the house or building and plug it into the Temperature Controller.
  3. Plug the Temperature Controller into a mains socket.

If the power is then switched on, and the RCD plug clicked in, the heating system will be working.

Safety (of both bats and humans) has been built into this product by design.  All the electrical parts are fully enclosed and the external items double insulated, while in the unlikely case that there is a problem, there is a malfunction alarm and cut-off, and an integrated residual current circuit breaker to protect all users from electrical shock.  The bats are protected from getting too close to the heater (which also has a temperature limiting device) by a small "fireguard".  Audible alarms warn of overheating and disconnection.

Key features of this innovative new product include:

  • Easy and safe to erect bat box on walls or trees
  • Easy (1 screw) to remove roof for cleaning or inspection where permitted
  • Factory fitted thermostatic heating system is simple, quick and safe to use
  • "Plug and Play" - plug in 2 plugs, switch on, and the system will work
  • Exterior surface stained with black water based woodstain forImproved thermal input, whilst avoiding any possibility of deterring use by bats due to vapour from the stain
  • Overhanging roof with additional internal insulation for protection from UK weather, and to seal crevices from internal airflow
  • 3 separate crevices each with different temperature characteristics
  • Wide entrance with accurately sized opening.  Ideal for the bats and deters unwelcome birds etc
  • Internal ceramic heat sinks ensure Improved temperature stability in crevices
  • Improved "Bat Ladder" at base of box facilitates bats landing and climbing into box
  • Ladder continues inside bat box, while textured internal surfaces ensure bats find it easy to move around inside bat nesting box and hang in crevices
  • Ladder acts as "convector heater" for bat box - when sun shines on ladder, warm air rises into the box, but does not come out when the outside cools
  • Improved draught-proofing enhances temperature stability inside box
  • Improved aesthetics - suits any building or tree
  • 50 Watt ceramic heater near base of bat box, with wireframe "fireguard" to protect bats
  • Self regulating PTC ceramic heater automatically protects against over-heating
  • Electrical connections to bat box waterproofed to IP66
  • 10 metre (approx) flexible cable permanently fixed to bat box, to allow box to be fitted high on wall if needed
  • Cable terminated with shrouded connector (to avoid fingers touching live terminals)
  • Microprocessor based temperature controller goes inside building, with power cord and mains plug
  • Sounds alarm and switches off if it detects a disconnection or too high a temperature
  • 4 push buttons to operate on/off and temperature control settings
  • Control settings retained when disconnected from mains
  • Status display on temperature controller shows current temperature and whether heater is switched on
  • Incorporates a residual current circuit breaker to protect both people and bats
  • Electrical installation does not require an electrician - plugs into standard mains socket
