The Footprint book is an extensive and in-depth reference work for adults on the footprints of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and invertebrates that occur in Northwestern Europe.
In the book of 452 pages, the prints of more than one hundred species are treated with more than 700 photos and more than 350 drawings. The Picture Book is made by René Nauta and Aaldrik Pot. They have worked on it for more than three years, but actually it has more than forty years of experience searching for prints (and traces). Mammalian prints are most extensively treated with around four pages for each species (around 40 in total). In addition to a description of the species, the characteristics of the front and the hind foot are discussed. Then there is a series of six photos of "prints from the field" on different surfaces. Finally, there is a comparison page between species whose prints are very similar. The footprints of a large number of bird species or bird groups are also discussed extensively. Of the amphibians, reptiles and invertebrates, the most common prints and walking tracks are treated. And here too, attention is constantly paid to the confusion and differences between the different species.
