Veldshop.nl presenteert met trots de BirdWeather PUC, een AI-aangedreven bio-akoestisch platform dat tegelijkertijd naar vogels luistert, detecties in realtime uploadt en uw gegevens opslaat op de ingebouwde microSD-kaart.

De PUC (Portable Universe Codec) omvat stereomicrofoons, WiFi/BLE, GPS, omgevingssensoren en een ingebouwde neurale motor, dat allemaal allemaal in een weerbestendige behuizing, hij is klaar om alles vast te leggen wat de natuur hem te bieden heeft.

De BirdWeather PUC is een eenvoudig, gebruiksvriendelijk (één-knops) draagbaar apparaat dat zich net zo goed thuis voelt in uw achtertuin, in het veld of tijdens een wandeling, waarbij het voortdurend "luistert" en meer dan 6.000 vogelsoorten wereldwijd identificeert.

De gratis apps is in het Nederlands beschikbaar. (Na de initiële Engelstalige koppeling met uw BirdWeather PUC)

Er zijn meerdere manieren om van uw BirdWeather PUC te genieten:

Gebruik het als een akoestisch station in de achtertuin: installeer uw PUC in de tuin en hij neemt voortdurend vogels in het geluidslandschap van uw achtertuin op, waarbij alle waarnemingen in realtime worden geüpload, zodat u weet wat er zingt, zelfs als u niet in de buurt bent.
Gebruik het onderweg: Neem uw PUC mee tijdens een wandeling of een ritje (of leg hem een paar dagen op een veilige plek) en eenmaal thuis worden alle gegevens automatisch geüpload naar BirdWeather, waar u kunt ontdekken wat u allemaal hebt gemist.
Gebruik het voor uw onderzoek: Wilt u PUC gebruiken voor uw eigen onderzoeksproject? Geen probleem! Het slaat al uw gegevens op de ingebouwde microSD-kaart op in een eenvoudig CSV-formaat, zodat u ze eenvoudig in uw project kunt importeren.

Cloudverwerking

De cloudserver gebruikt het neurale netwerk BirdNET (een gezamenlijk project van het K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics van het Cornell Lab of Ornithology en de Chemnitz University of Technology) om alle audio-soundscapes van de PUC te verwerken, met:

Over batterijen

U kunt elk type AA-batterij in uw PUC gebruiken (Alkaline, NIMH, Lithium en Lithium-Ion). Hij toont de (3x AA) spanning in de BirdWeather App, zodat u de batterijduur in de gaten kunt houden. U kunt ook elke standaard USB-C 5V-voeding gebruiken om uw PUC continu van stroom te voorzien, zoals als een powerbank. Het is mogelijk om uw eigen zonnepaneel aan de BirdWeather PUC te koppelen.

Let op: de PUC kan geen batterijen opladen via de USB-C-poort. Als u oplaadbare batterijen gebruikt, moet u deze extern opladen. U kunt de PUC echter wel van stroom voorzien via USB-C terwijl de batterijen er in zitten, dat is volkomen veilig.

Hoe zit het met privacy?

1 - BirdWeather verwijdert automatisch alle soundscapes met menselijke stemdetectie.

2 - U kunt op elk moment de BirdWeather Mobiele App gebruiken om het uploaden naar de BirdWeather Server tijdelijk (of permanent) uit te schakelen. Het is een eenvoudige instelling in de app en gaat onmiddellijk van kracht.

After reading about the “BirdWeather PUC” in the Veldshop newsletter I quickly bought it and put it to the test. The initial config wasn’t too difficult using USB-C cable leading from my computer for power and the “BirdWeather” app installed on my mobile phone (with Bluetooth switched on to connect to the PUC), at some point it asks for your WiFi settings so it will be able to upload the audio recordings directly from the PUC. With the app and puc up and running the firmware was also updated. The instructions on the website “PUC Quick Start Guide” I found easy to follow. Now I had to prepare for my little test drive, I changed the 32 Gb SD for a 128 GB SD card (there are no SD specs on the website but the 128 GB SD does work, I now think 32 Gb is plenty). From a practical POV: how was I going to attach the PUC to my backpack? At this point I was not prepared to shell out another 40+ euros on the custom BirdWeather backpack so I decided to fabricate my own little harness for the PUC using some string and making sure it was nowhere near the two microphones. I had a bit of luck with my backpack because I could dip the PUC in one of the pockets with 2/3 of the PUC still sticking out and the strings tied to a clip of sorts reducing the chance of the puc getting lost. If you consider the odd triangular shape of the PUC and the clip-on character of the bracket that is provided securing it to e.g. a backpack is no easy task. Perhaps some aftermarket solution or DIY hack will fix this problem. On the 12th of May 2024 starting at 3 PM I rode my (non-electric) bicycle from Den Bosch to Nijmegen (60-70 Km scenic route with detours to small nature reserves) at some point switching off the PUC because it got dark and I wanted to use my Batlogger M (never knew I really need a backpack that can accommodate two recording devices!). I powered the PUC with three NI-MH Eneloop AA batteries. During the trip there wasn’t much info available within the app (obviously with Bluetooth switched on) about my PUC and its recordings, so I was preparing myself that perhaps all day long nothing was recorded? When I returned home I connected the PUC to the USB-C power source and the PUC (to my delight!) started to upload the 930+ recordings to the Birdweather server through the WiFi connection. After your upload is completed the Birdweather.com website shows you the results, if you know where to look for it: Explore menu  Data Explorer and then select your personal PUC (e.g. PUC-nnnn) with additional filter options. I was well pleased with the results, some obvious identification mistakes, but the bulk 100% accurate. I noticed the volume of the recordings was a bit weak so I increased the Db gain of my PUC in the Birdweather app for future recordings. The website app.birdweather.com/data is currently by far the weakest part of the Birdweather PUC system: you can’t set up a personal account and profile, the filters are limited and only available in a side menu, listening to a recording is a two click thing and moving on to the next or previous recording is rather slow or hangs outright. There are no reports for a particular day of field recordings (but obviously you can still select a particular day to view); selecting a particular species can only be accomplished through the side menu of filters, it should be possible in the main window. Any web developer worth her/his salt could dramatically improve the website in the time span of three days or so but I fear this very poor web interface is the one we will be looking at for a long time. Is it possible to connect your PUC to a computer and see what is stored on the SD card? For what I can tell the PUC is not recognized as a (USB) storage device, so the only way to view your data (including a CSV file with recording data) is by taking the SD card out of the PUC and putting it in a SD adapter connected to your computer, that is not ideal especially since the SD card sits in a feeble slide frame similar to SIM trays in many mobile phones. In conclusion the “BirdWeather PUC” is a great product, it will log a fantastic amount of bird sounds on your trips (or you could use it stationary collecting sounds at a particular location). The backend of the “BirdWeather PUC” platform, notably its website needs some serious improvements soon.

Works excellent. The setup was a bit tricky and not all bird species are correctly identified, but AI will probably learn how to fix that in the future. Would definitely recommend.

Funktioniert nur manchmal. Das Gerät zeichnet nicht immer die GPS-Daten auf. Warum das mal funktionert und warum mal nicht, kann ich nicht herausfinden. Die Sounddateien sind oft zerschossen. Man hört nur eine fehlerhaftes tatatatata. Die Benutzerführung der App ist eine Katastrophe. Man kann sich mit dem PUC nur verbinden, wenn man ein WiFi-Netz hat. Die Erkennung mit BirdNet ist zwar hervorragend, aber dafür kann man auch andere Aufnahmegräte verwenden. Da ist noch viel Entwicklungsarbeit zu leisten.

Leuk idee, maar de uitvoering kan beter. Mooi apparaat om 's nachts en overdag te monitoren wat er in en over je tuin vliegt. Echter, het belangrijkste wat het moet doen doet hij niet goed genoeg: regelmatig zijn herkenningen van vogelgeluiden onjuist. Dat doet de Merlin Bird ID app stukken beter. Daarnaast is het niet echt snel: de wifi verbinding lijkt niet stabiel en de app/server is erg traag. Maar als het werkt, is het leuk om de hele historie terug te kunnen luisteren, en zelfs ook van andere stations. Het apparaat vreet batterijen, voor deze prijs had er wel een built-in oplaadbare lithium batterij in mogen zitten, of in ieder geval een usb-c kabel meegeleverd mogen worden. De extra sensoren in het apparaat (weer, licht) zijn leuk, maar het nut ontgaat mij. Ook geeft de CO2 sensor bij mij geen juiste waarden. Ik heb nog niet gevonden hoe ik de audiobestanden gemakkelijk kan exporteren. Ik hoop dat ze het product nog verder kunnen verbeteren.

Erg leuk om te horen wat er allemaal over het huis vliegt ‘s nachts. Werkt simpel en goed. Logischerwijs nog wel wat fouten in de soortherkenning maar da’s een kwestie van even naluisteren. Gebruikt fors wat batterijen bij continu gebruik maar een geschikte Powerbank kan dat leed verzachten. Niet iedere Powerbank is geschikt dus even lezen op de site. Ik gebruik er eenje van Belkin en die doet het goed. Uiteraard wel “Waterdicht” maken.Er is een community opgericht, speciaal voor de PUC. Daar is heel veel info te verkrijgen. Aanrader!

I bought the PUC from the KickStarter because I'd been experimenting with BirdNetPi (BirdNet running on a Raspberry Pi) for some time but could not get a configuration that I'd trust to stay dry in the rain. The PUC is a nice device. Somewhat less configuration options and access to it's data is a bit more cumbersome than with a BirdNetPi, but the benefits are clearly there as well: It is waterproof. I've had it outside in the wettest months of the year and even accidentally forgot to put back the rubber plug of the USBC-port while poutting it out there in the rain. It keeps on working! It is portable. With 3 2600mha rechargeable GP ReCyco AA batteries it runs for nearly 1.5 day. You can take it with you on a hike and have it upload it's recordings when you get home. That can be slow tough, up to a number of hours if you have had a long walk. I, at the moment, have it outside with a powerbank which obviously keeps it running for longer (up to ~4 days?). The powerbank in a reasonably waterproof encasement and the PUC out there for full exposure to the birdsounds. When it is within WiFi range, it continuously uploads. The swithcing between modes (out walking, uploading, withing wifi etc) is a bit finicky: Paying attention to the colors of blinking LED's when starting the thing up, but you'll get used to that and in my case that does not need to happen often. It has good support. The creators are super active at their online forum and helpful with anything you have to ask. The community is growing too, so all good. Next to the forum there's the various ways to get to the data of the PUC. The app (needed for setup too) and the website. I don't really like that all communication goes through the cloud, but hey... It provides access to your and other stations' data including the recordings ready to download and upload to, for instance waarneming.nl/observation.org. (audio currently needs a bit of work with free software for better clarity (see a post on their forum). All things considered, I'm really happy with it and check the app first thing in the morning to see/hear if the owls were making noise again and the checking continues throughout the day :). I got it cheaper being a KickStarter backer and the normal price is a bit steep to me, but I suppose the servers need maintaining... The DIY solution of a BirdNetPi setup would be a fair amount cheaper, but a lot more work and, again, requires finding a way to get it all waterproof. Convenience costs some...
