Toucans, toucanets and araçaris are fascinating birds, whose 43 species inhabit large parts of South and Central America. With their bright colours and sometimes grotesquely enlarged beaks, they captivate zoo visitors and birdwatchers alike. However, this perceived familiarity should not obscure the fact that many species are still inadequately known. Indeed, some of them have been studied in their natural environments, and others are well known from successful zoo or private husbandry. However, we do not know enough about the vast majority of species, either in the wild or in captivity, to be able to determine their conservation status or to have gained sufficient experience with successful husbandry or breeding. Both are important in times of ongoing habitat destruction, especially deforestation of the Amazonian forest areas, where toucans, toucanets and araçaris occur alongside many other species, in times of climate change, severe weather disasters and political instability, in order to be able to initiate countermeasures, if necessary.
