Flapshell turtles are unique in many ways. Since they differ remarkably from other soft-shelled turtles in aspects of behaviour and morphology they are seperated into two subfamilies. Their most fascinating and prominent feature, however, are the unique flaps above their hind extremities and tail. Another intriguing feauture of these animals is their secretive life style. The survival of these extraordinary animals may have been procured by exactly these features and behavious for millions of years. Unfortunately we still know so little about the Afriican flasshell turtles, that we would hardly notice if we would threaten them in their existence by one or the other actiities caused by man. Therefore it is the intention of this book to compile all available data on the four species of African flasphell turtles.
