Landgoed de Braak is about an estate in the shadow of Groningen, on the provincial border with Drenthe. Founded in the seventeenth century by the Groningen elite in order to enjoy the attractive landscape outside the city. While it was initially a park that mainly attracted the elite, it later became a popular hiking destination for the Stadjers. After it was bought in 1827 by entrepreneur Abraham Hesselink, the park was transformed by the well-known garden architect Lucas Peters Roodbaard (1782 - 1851) into a landscaped park with woods and beautiful water features.
Today De Braak is owned by Natuurmonumenten, a Dutch nature conservation foundation, for whom this was the first purchase of an estate. Since then, this park has an even more explicit public function and is a place for the residents of the city of Groningen and far beyond to enjoy nature and culture.
Landgoed De Braak is a beautiful reflection of the history and creation of a park where nature and culture come together.
