The Soil Acoustic Meter (SAM) is an advanced field device designed to assess biological soil health through acoustic monitoring. By recording the acoustic activity of soil invertebrates such as earthworms, beetles, ants and larvae, the SAM provides measurable insight into underground biodiversity and living soil conditions directly in the field. The SAM is suitable for farmers, agronomists, vineyard managers, estate owners and agroforestry or rewilding projects. It complements conventional soil measurements such as soil organic carbon, pH, bulk density and earthworm counts with a dynamic biodiversity indicator.
The device uses a detachable probe equipped with a high-sensitivity contact microphone. Once inserted into the topsoil, the probe captures vibrations and sounds generated by organisms moving through soil particles, interacting within the litter layer, or producing natural communication signals. These recordings are uploaded to the Soil Acoustics Data Portal, where proprietary algorithms analyse the soundscape and generate a Soil Acoustic Quality Index (SAQI) score. This index reflects the richness and intensity of soil life: higher biodiversity results in a higher SAQI score.
Each Soil Acoustic Meter includes one detachable probe and a one-year subscription to the online data analysis platform. The SAM operates on two AA batteries (not included). Using the supplied USB-C to USB-A cable, recordings can be transferred to a computer and uploaded securely to the portal. Within your account, you can organise fields, compare datasets, listen to recordings and download detailed reports.
The device is operated using a single multi-function button. Press once for one second to power on, press for three seconds to begin recording, and hold for five seconds to switch off. The SAM automatically switches off after five minutes of inactivity. LED indicators display power status, GPS connection, recording activity and sound levels.
How it works
Insert the probe into the soil and start a recording. Step back at least one metre and remain still and quiet for four minutes. For consistent results, take around ten recordings per field or management zone. In areas with varying soil conditions, repeat the process in each section. Testing can be conducted as often as needed, though at least two measurements per year are recommended, such as late spring and early autumn. Additional tests before and after soil treatments, tillage or harvest provide valuable comparative insights.
Account Activation
After purchase, you will receive a one-time activation link to access the Soil Acoustics Data Portal. You can confirm your login email address and adjust your organisation name if required. Once activated, you can immediately upload and analyse your recordings online.
