This bilingual French - English book presents the 506 species of birds (of which 155 are breeding and 103 presumed to be such) (plus 86 species with uncertain status) that have been observed in Mauritania. This West African country is located at the crossroads of both the Sahara and the Sahel as well as the Palearctic Zone and the Afrotropical Zone. It presents the available data on the status, phenology, distribution, habitat and reproduction of species, as well as on the origin of migrants and winter visitors. There is also information on geography, the history of ornithological surveys, the biogeographical affinities of breeding species, the role of the country in the migration of birds between Eurasia and Africa and an exhaustive bibliography. This country includes the Banc d'Arguin which is the most prestigious wintering place for sub-arctic waders as well as many wetlands hosting palearctic and afrotropical visitors.
