The BirdFox Batmic Microphone is an ultrasonic capsule designed for the Birdmic parabolic microphone system.
The Batmic capsule can be screwed into the Birdmic dish ONE or PRO, effectively transforming your bird-recording microphone into a bat detector. The device divides the frequency by ten, making ultrasonic sounds audible to the human ear; it covers a range of 20 to 80 kHz. Using the same setup and cables, you can suddenly detect and listen to the sounds of bats.
When combined with a parabolic dish, you can pinpoint the animal's direction more accurately, while ambient noise is reduced to ensure clearer recordings.
The BirdFox Batmic Microphone can also be used independently, without a parabolic dish. It features its own built-in mounting thread, allowing you to attach it anywhere and connect it to a recording device. While you will be able to hear the pulses, you will not be able to see them, as the spectrogram is displayed via the app. Please note that when using the Batmic without the Birdmic ONE or PRO, you will need an orange TRS-TRS cable (not included) to connect the Batmic to a recorder.
The device displays the frequency of the sounds, which helps in determining the genus; however, you must identify the specific species yourself. For some species, the frequency ranges overlap, meaning this device cannot provide a definitive identification at the species level.
The sensor records sounds between 20 and 80 kHz, covering the majority of the bat-call spectrum. Sounds above this range, however, are not captured—for instance, horseshoe bats emit signals at frequencies that fall outside the range of this sensor.
