The MHB Nest Box House Sparrow was specifically developed for the House Sparrow, following BIJ12 guidelines. The House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) is a common urban bird often found near people. They live in colonies and build their nests in sheds, gutters, and trees. They eat mainly seeds and small insects. The breeding season for this species runs from February to July. This box is ideal for placing on houses, sheds, or other buildings near residential areas. Water and dense shrubs are essential for attracting House Sparrows. Without these, the chance of a House Sparrow occupying the box is much smaller. House Sparrows breed in colonies. Therefore, consider placing multiple boxes, with at least 50 cm of space between them.
BIJ12 is an organization that assists provinces in the Netherlands with nature management, agriculture, and legislation regarding protected animals and plants. They ensure that regulations from the Nature Conservation Act are properly applied. For example, if nests or roosts of birds and bats are lost during construction projects, BIJ12 determines which measures are necessary.
Material: The MHB Nest Box House Sparrow is made of FSC-certified wood from sustainably managed forests.
Lifespan: Approximately 10 years. The lifespan can be extended to 15 years by treating the nest box with an environmentally friendly wood preservative, such as linseed oil or a linseed oil-based stain.
Maintenance: Outside the breeding season, the birdhouse can be opened and nesting materials removed. If necessary, wipe the inside with a damp cloth. Or gently clean it with a soft dish brush without soap and water. Try to use as little water as possible (do not completely submerge the box). This prevents the wood from warping. The box can be left up during the winter as a shelter for birds from the cold and predators.
Assembly: The box is easy to hang with a screw or hook.
Installation instructions:
- Choose a quiet, sheltered location, preferably with shade or morning sun.
- Mount the box 1.5 to 2 meters high, free from obstacles such as branches or walls.
- Position the entrance facing north, east, or southeast, away from strong winds or direct sunlight.
