The MHB Swift Nest Box was specially developed in accordance with BIJ12 guidelines for the Swift. This nest box is ideal for placing on houses, sheds, or other buildings near residential areas. Consider placing multiple boxes, as swifts like to nest in colonies. The nest box is especially important during the swift's breeding season, which usually runs from May to August. Outside this period, there's a small chance the box will serve as a shelter for other animals, such as insects or bats.
BIJ12 is an organization that assists provinces in the Netherlands with nature management, agriculture, and legislation regarding protected animals and plants. They ensure that the rules of the Nature Conservation Act are properly applied. For example, if bird and bat nests or roosts disappear during construction projects, BIJ12 determines what measures are necessary.
Material: The MHB Swift Nest Box is made of FSC-certified wood from sustainably managed forests.
Lifespan: Approximately 10 years. The lifespan can be extended to 15 years by treating the nest box with an environmentally friendly wood preservative, such as linseed oil or a linseed oil-based stain.
Maintenance: Swifts clean their own nests, so you generally don't need to maintain them.
Assembly: The boxes are easy to hang with screws or hooks.
Installation instructions:
- Hang the nest box at least 3 meters high.
- Preferably face north or east to prevent overheating.
- Place the box on a wall, preferably in a quiet area with a clear flight path.
