The S1 Hydrophone is a modified version of the AS-1 Hydrophone, which has been produced by Aquarian Audio & Scientific since 2013. The S1 Hydrophone builds upon the capabilities and ease of use of the AS-1. The S1eX variant of the S1 Hydrophone has integrated signal conditioning. This generally improves sensitivity and reduces noise. The S1 Hydrophone is designed to provide a stable and linear broadband response within the frequency range of 4.3Hz-110KHz, and is supported by most mass-produced audio recording devices. The S1eX version of the S1 Hydrophone has an XLR output and is designed for use with microphone preamplifiers that provide phantom power, allowing this hydrophone to be connected directly to audio recorders, computer interfaces (and sometimes video cameras) that have these features. This makes the hydrophone easier to use with higher quality, standard equipment, and allows for high quality, cost-effective underwater sound analysis.
Phantom power typically needs to be activated with a switch or through the menu options of modern recording devices. If you're not getting any sound from your hydrophone, this is the first thing to check. Many devices offer phantom power options. 48V is the original standard for phantom power and works well with the S1e. The S1eX requires at least 24V. You can benefit from longer battery life in your recording device by choosing a lower phantom voltage. Operation is as simple as with a regular condenser microphone. Connect the S1e directly to the recording or PA device. No additional accessories are required. While some measurement instruments use this type of microphone connection, keep in mind that almost all recording devices and audio interfaces do not offer a calibrated input. These types of mass-produced audio devices can offer exceptional performance at very low cost for relative measurements, but absolute measurements (such as measuring sound intensity levels) require the user to calibrate the system for any desired gain adjustments in the recorder.
Like the AS-1, the S1 Hydrophone offers omnidirectional performance within the human hearing range and provides omnidirectional response on the horizontal axis across all frequencies (theoretically). This makes the S1 Hydrophone ideal for precise underwater sound measurements in both marine and industrial applications. The hydrophone comes with a 10-meter cable.
The hydrophone is supplied in a snug, breathable EVA case.
